Literacy
Literacy is probably the most fundamental and crucial part of education and life-long learning. Without it, all other learning is impossible.
It is defined as “the capacity to read, understand and critically appreciate various forms of communication including spoken language, printed text, broadcast media, and digital media.”
In response to the national strategy (2011-2020) to improve literacy and numeracy, CNC Kilcormac has put a new literacy programme in place to develop literacy in our school, these include:
- First year students visit Birr Library to develop a love of literature.
- Junior Cycle students have a literacy lesson once a week to improve general spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Junior Cycle students take part in a ‘Spelling Bee’ competition.
- All students record key words for all their subjects.
- All students take part in monthly Drop Everything And Read.
- Literacy noticeboard in the school with word of the week, grammar posters, synonyms and quotations from famous authors.
- Debating and Public Speaking is offered to all students to develop confidence & fluency when speaking aloud.
- Book Club is offered to encourage reading for enjoyment.
