Firceall & Sonas

The Coláiste Naomh Cormac ASD Programme, Firceall was established in September 2018 and Sonas was established in 2024. The aim of Firceall and Sonas is based on the philosophy of educational inclusion such that children with specialised needs receive their education within the least restrictive setting of the school’s mainstream classrooms and activities.

Students attend mainstream classes with their peers where possible and are supported as needed. The teachers, support staff and parents are partners in the student’s education. Differentiation is an integral part of the learning environment. Each student will have a ‘Student Support File’ and the support they receive will be based on their needs in order for them to achieve their potential.

Students individual needs and abilities are paramount to success. We cater for a wide range of abilities from those students looking to pursue state examinations (Junior Cycle, Level 2 Learning Programme, Leaving Certificate and QQI qualifications), to those focusing on personal skills aimed at increasing their quality of life once they graduate from Coláiste Naomh Cormac.

Firceall and Sonas have a state-of-the-art sensory room which can be used as needed for students to regulate throughout the school dat. Students in both classes will have the support from Special Needs Assistants who are on hand to help students according to their needs.

Students in Firceall and Sonas are valued at Coláiste Naomh Cormac. They interact with other students and participate in school occasions and celebrations as much as possible. They are encouraged to join extra-curricular activities at lunchtime. There is also a representative from Firceall and Sonas nominated to the Student Council each year to ensure their voice is heard.
