Coláiste Naomh Cormac has had considerable success in many sporting events.
For several decades Coláiste Naomh Cormac has been a centre of excellence for hurling. Our pupils and past pupils have proved a dominant force at school, club and county level. Our school promotes a centre of excellence in promoting Hurling. We recognize that Hurling is close to the hearts of the people in our catchment area. We appreciate all that’s best in hurling; the deft skills and timing, the speed of thought and teamwork, the physical courage and spirit of give and take and decency that no other sport could hope to better. Our teams compete valiantly in the Tri coloured jersey.
Because Coláiste Naomh Cormac is a small school students get a better opportunity to hurl here. This contrasts with the larger schools where many potentially good hurlers are surplus to requirement and eventually fall to the wayside to the detriment of their clubs. In CNC, strong under 14s get to play on the under 16 team in addition to competing in their own age group. Similarly, several under 16 players get a chance to represent the school at senior level annually.
We practice every day at lunchtime with the emphasis on developing skilful scoring forwards. Our teachers give generously of their time and talents.
The students that honed their skills on the fields behind our school have dominated underage hurling in Offaly for the past three decades In the last year alone our Senior and U14 teams won out their competition at Leinster level.
We applaud all the hurlers, past and present, who compete voluntarily and experience the joy of the game and display their pride in and loyalty to their school and parish.
Coláiste Naomh Cormac has a proud and prominent camogie culture which is replicated in our past and present camogie teams’ successes.
In the last two years alone, both our Senior and Junior camogie teams have won their respective Leinster finals, and our Junior team were All-Ireland finalists in the spring of 2023!
Coláiste Naomh Cormac Badminton Club caters to experienced club players and to beginners alike. The club meets and trains at lunch break on Mondays and Thursdays. Teams from Coláiste Naomh Cormac compete in the Offaly Post-Primary Schools Blitz at U19, U16 and U14 levels in both boys and girls as players are available. To date, teams from CNC have won U19 Offaly Girls twice and U14 Offaly Boys. U14 Girls were Offaly Runners-up. All four teams have gone forward to represent Offaly in the Leinster Badminton Blitz. The U14 Boys came home with Silver Medals. New members are welcome to try badminton and train for school teams. The school is very appreciative of the work done by Ms. Judy Bryant on her coaching of students in the sport.
On Thursday 3rd October 66 students from 1st to 6th year represented Coláiste Naomh Cormac at the annual County Sports Athletic competition in Tullamore Harriers Athletic stadium. Students competed against five local post primary schools in a range of track and field events. Students came away with many individual medals in events such as high jump, 4 X 100m relay, 100m and 200m sprint, 800m and long jump. Overall on the day, Coláiste Naomh Cormac were runner up winners in the Junior and Intermediate categories and finishing 2nd in the overall school’s category.
The chess club here at Coláiste Naomh Cormac is a hub for both beginners and experienced players to challenge themselves at one of the world’s oldest games. Students meet at lunchtime on Monday and Thursdays to hone their skills at both the traditional variation and occasionally three person chess! We are hoping to show off these skills at tournaments later on in the school year.
